How to Add Captions to TikTok Videos (Auto and Animated)

Add captions to TikTok with built-in auto captions or burn in animated, styled captions before upload. Step-by-step, with layout and readability tips.

You can add captions to a TikTok video in two ways: turn on TikTok's own auto captions when you post, or burn styled captions into the video before you upload it. TikTok's auto captions are quick and free but have limited styling and the viewer can hide them. Burned-in captions take a few more minutes but look exactly as you designed, on every phone and every repost.

This guide walks through both methods, when to use each, and how to make captions that viewers can actually read.

Method 1: TikTok's built-in auto captions

TikTok can generate captions from your video's speech during posting. Its help centre explains how to turn on auto captions and edit the generated text before publishing. 1 The general flow is:

  1. Record or upload your video and continue to editing.
  2. Choose the captions option and let TikTok transcribe the speech.
  3. Review the text and fix any errors.
  4. Post.

Good for: fast, simple, speech-heavy clips where styling does not matter. Limitations: styling options are basic, accuracy varies with accents, music and slang, supported languages depend on TikTok, and viewers can choose to hide captions.

Method 2: Burn styled captions in before uploading

For a branded look — big bold words, a highlighted active word, colours, emoji or animation — create the captions in a caption tool or editor and export the finished video with the text already in the picture.

A typical workflow:

  1. Upload your clip to a caption tool.
  2. Auto-transcribe the speech.
  3. Correct the words. Fix names, product terms and numbers.
  4. Choose a style. Word-by-word or short phrases tend to suit TikTok's pace.
  5. Position captions above the bottom interface and away from the right-hand buttons.
  6. Export a vertical 1080×1920 MP4 at the clip's original frame rate.
  7. Upload to TikTok and leave TikTok's auto captions off, so two sets of text don't overlap.

In CaptionLabs this is the whole flow: transcription for English, Hindi and Hinglish, word-level editing, 50+ animated templates including word-by-word styles, and a watermark-free export rendered in your browser. Word timings are estimated, so play through and adjust any lines that land early or late. Outside India, an export costs $3 (or $5 for Pro FX) with no subscription. Open the studio or visit the TikTok caption generator page.

Caption style tips that suit TikTok

  • Short chunks. One to four words at a time keeps pace with fast speech.
  • Highlight the spoken word if your style supports it, so viewers track along. See word-by-word animated captions.
  • High contrast. White or yellow text with a dark stroke reads over most footage.
  • Stay out of the overlay areas. The bottom description and right-side buttons cover parts of the frame. Our safe zone guide applies closely to TikTok too.
  • Don't caption over faces. Move text above or below the speaker.
  • Keep it accurate. Wrong words distract more than missing words.

Common problems

Captions overlap TikTok's interface. Move them higher, toward the lower-middle third, and narrow the line width.

Two sets of captions appear. Turn off TikTok's auto captions for videos that already have burned-in text.

Captions drift out of sync. Check the export plays at the same frame rate as the original and adjust timings where speech is fast.

Text looks blurry. Use a thicker font and a stroke; thin text suffers more from compression.

Frequently asked questions

Does TikTok add captions automatically?

TikTok offers auto captions that you can turn on and edit while posting. Availability and languages depend on TikTok.

Can I edit TikTok's auto captions?

Yes, TikTok lets you review and edit the generated text before you post.

How do I add animated captions to TikTok?

Create them in a caption tool or editor, export the video with captions burned in, and upload that file.

Will burned-in captions hurt my reach?

There is no verified evidence either way. Captions make videos easier to follow with sound off, which helps viewers, but no caption method guarantees reach.
